We reported last month on Volvo Truck's announcement attempt to set a world speed record with its Mean Green hybrid diesel truck. Well, the attempt was made, and records were set. Mean Green ran the flying kilometer at 147.002 mph, and from a standing start at 95.245 mph.
Those figures may not sound all that incredible, but don't forget Mean Green is a full-sized big rig based on a production VN-series chassis.
Driver Boije Overbrink was happy with conditions prior to the truck's run, saying, "The airfield here is much better. It's not jumpy, the atmosphere is perfect. I'm very, very pleased."
The speed record attemtps were sanctioned by the United States Auto Club (USAC) the U.S. arm of FIA, the interational motorsports governing body. The world record is subject to FIA's final recognition, which is expected between 30-60 days.
