With a history of building some surprisingly capable machines, Subaru is a name familiar to many truck enthusiasts. And although the brand's Impreza nameplate has earned a reputation as a dirt-loving rally special, there are still some places you probably shouldn't take one -- like the boulder-filled trail in this video, for example.
The driver of this first-generation Subaru Impreza ran into trouble when he took a wrong turn on the forest service road he was allegedly racing on, puncturing the car's oil pan on a rock, according to the video's description. Following (or sometimes not following) the directions of a few trail regulars acting as spotters, the Impreza driver attempts to steer his car along the path of least resistance as its towed to safety. After scraping on numerous rocks, and losing a few parts along the way, the Impreza finally makes it to a flatter, more familiar landscape. Although the model is known for its competent all-wheel drive system, this Impreza met its match on a trail meant for vehicles with much, much more ground clearance.
It's unclear whether the car's less-than-professionally-applied graphics are meant to be serious or not, but seeing the words "Off Road" spray-painted across the trunk and rear bumper somehow adds a bit of irony to this video. Trail: 1; Impreza: 0.
