Probably the most interesting buzz at the show surrounded the on-again/off-again idea that Jeep is coming back to the market with a pickup truck.
If you recall, the concept was shown to dealers about 18 months ago at the end of one of their yearly meetings. Nothing was said at the time, but from a production and marketing point of view, the timing and expense might be as good as it's going to get, especially if Jeep can leverage some of the Fiat and European diesel technology.
It's no secret the compact truck segment has been flat and estimated by some to continue shrinking; however, many complained the four-door SUV market was saturated before the Unlimited Wrangler hit the market too. To succeed, Jeep would need to bring something unique to a bland compact and midsize truck market. It shouldn't be too difficult to shake things up but we'd suggest the vehicle have more than just your typical Jeep capability; in addition, the bed can't just be another load holder.
We've seen many interesting concepts over the years but never any kind of long-term game plan. They've got the ability to create a longer wheelbase and the Wrangler platform so why not a softtop pickup? Let's hope the rumors are true.
