It's not official, but this is what could possibly be in the works with the forthcoming Chrysler-Fiat merger.
These 2011 Jeep Phoenix 4x4 renderings are of a redressed and rebadged Fiat Panda Cross 4x4, which is quite popular in Europe. It's small, affordable, and apparently a capable off-roader. The Fiat Panda Cross 4x4 is powered by a 1.3L turbodiesel with about 73 hp, but in all likelihood, the Phoenix would get a gas engine. Fuel economy would probably be in the 50 mpg range. With less than 100 hp, the Phoenix won't be blowing the doors off of anything, but with its four-wheel drive, two electronic locking differentials, and adequate ground clearance, it should have no problems when traveling off the pavement. Don't expect the Phoenix to win any rock-crawling competitions, though.
Perhaps one of the strongest selling points of the Phoenix is its price. Considering the size and starting price of the Fiat Panda, the Phoenix couldn't possibly cost much more than $10K. After a couple years of turning out non-Trail Rated Jeeps, an affordable off-road option that gets great gas mileage could be just what the Jeep brand needs.
