Looks like the baby Duramax isn't the only thing that's on hold at GM. Things seem to change minute by minute at General Motors, but the latest news is that Pontiac and Saturn will no longer be a part of the company. Pontiac is said to be phased out after the 2010 model year and Saturn is possibly going to be spun off as its own company. When you factor in the potential sale of Saab and either sale or dissolution of Hummer, the General loses the following vehicles from its lineup:
- Saturn Outlook
- Saturn Vue
- Hummer H2, H2 SUT
- Hummer H3,
- H3T
And we'll probably never see what the Hummer HX concept could've been. The Saab 9-7x was already slated to be discontinued, as was the Pontiac Torrent (to be replaced by the 2010 GMC Terrain), but what's odd is that GM is still listing the Saab 9-4x as part of its future lineup. And, if there is an up side to what's happening at GM, as of press time, Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac still exist. We've also heard that the number of GM dealerships in the United States is going to be cut in half.
Chrysler became the first major U.S. Automaker to declare bankruptcy, filing Chapter 11. And after taking an initial 20-percent stake in the company, Fiat will eventually become the majority owner. Like GM, it, too will reduce the number of dealerships, but we don't yet know how many will close. You can expect Chrysler will also reduce the number of vehicles it produces--but it will still produce vehicles.
