1. The loss of consumer choice outweighs any benefits of these two companies getting connected. When car companies were plentiful, the thought of one merging with another was not quite as significant. Now, that the country is down to three, the mergers come at a far higher price. Lack of different models (as well of lack of quality) has long been one of GM's biggest detractors. Too many similar models killed Olds and has taken a significant toll on Buick. Merging in three more divisions will only cause GM more troubles. Does it really make sense for GM to want to acquire Jeep when it is shopping around to sell Hummer?

The trouble is that merging is the only thing that finance guys know how to do in business. If they can't make an immediate buck out of it, the answer is to merge it away and get what you can. The trouble is that for things to get better for american auto manufacturers, the economy here had to get worse. People have to have a strong desire to keep auto manufacturing dollars here. While we have that, auto sales are down with the credit and housing crises. So now, Cerberus is looking to dump its ownership. It has GMAC lust and would do anything to get full control of GMAC while pushing auto manufacturing off in another direction. The problem is that it cannot get financing. To get financing would require it get financing from the UAW or even the U.S. government itself. We already know that the UAW is against the merger. It would eliminate middle class manufacturing jobs while sending pat-yourself-on-the-back bonuses to Cerberus owners. We know the UAW won't push for that scenario. If they don't, how could the U.S. government give money for that either?
