1. I think there's a real market for the smaller, turbo-diesel powered truck. I've put 158,000 miles on an F-150, owned a Silverado, and now have a Dodge Ram as the extra car in the driveway. I don't need to haul horses or a motorboat so I would love to see a pick-up version in the style of the Ridgeline derived from the Ford Escape, Toyota RAV-4, Subaru Forester, or Jeep Patriot. The important thing is that they offer a 5 foot pick-up bed (that's why I didn't get a Subaru Baja), AWD with moderate off-road capability, and 25 mpg hwy) This segment just needs to be done right. It doesn't make sense to buy a 'small' pick-up in the US that only gets 2-3 mpg better than the full-size versions. It needs to be at least 10 mpg better than the full size to be worth the purchase, otherwise the small pick-up segment will continue dwindle.

2. An ideal truck would be the diesel Toyota Hilux (almost the same as the Tacoma) which has been sold overseas for decades. Can't wait til Dodge, Chevy, Ford & Toyota come out with diesel 1/2 tons. Car sales are in the toilet now not only because of the economy but also there's no reason to buy the same old vehicles that get so-so mpg. They've tested a 2007 diesel Santa Fe in Australia that got 52mpg! Similar results elsewhere with diesel Honda Accords & Subaru Foresters. Bring them here and see car sales go off the chart!
