Readers who wheel-watched in the 1970s and 1980s may remember what were then known as freaks: things like Datsun Z-car, Chevy Vega, and Dodge Charger bodies fitted on top of four-wheel-drive frames to make 4x4 coupes.
Even American Motors made a sort-of factory version with the Spirit SX/4 liftback four-wheel drive. Following the debuts of the BMW X6 and Land Rover LRX concepts, maybe those freak builders were just way ahead of their time.
